Mobile and southwest Alabama is a metropolitan area of over 600,000 people. The principal industrial enterprises are aerospace manufacturing, shipbuilding, international shipping and logistics, steel manufacturing and processing, forestry products and seafood processing. The market is served by 5 Class I national railroads, deep draft shipping channels for blue water commerce and barge draft connections (east/west and north/south) for inland transshipment, and the longest airport runway east of the Mississippi River. It straddles the junction of I-10 (Jacksonville to Los Angeles) and I-65 (Mobile to Chicago). Further, one of the three transcontinental fiber backbones running from the east coast to the west coast runs right through the middle of Downtown Mobile.
